Toyota Safety Sense™ Systems

Toyota Safety Sense™ became available on Palm Beach Gardens vehicles in 2015. This driver-assist safety system uses sensors in the vehicle’s windshield, front grille, and bumpers to help the driver monitor other vehicles or objects in their projected path. The Toyota Safety Sense™ system will alert the driver with audible and visual cues if their vehicle comes too close to another car or an object. In some systems, if the driver doesn’t take corrective action, the system will step in and either apply the brakes or move the vehicle to avoid a collision. There are four main types of Toyota Safety Sense™ systems, including the recently debuted Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS 2.5). Learn the basics about each of these systems below.

Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5)

Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5) is the newest generation of driver-assist safety offered by Toyota. Currently, only the 2021 Toyota Camry and the 2021 Toyota Highlander offer Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5). This innovative new system builds on the programs offered in Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) and adds an advanced camera, millimeter-wave radar, and grille mounted radar to improve response range and enhance pedestrian detection. Intersection support is available on Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5), offering assistance when drivers approach an intersection to make a turn. Emergency steering assist is also available to help stabilize a driver’s steering maneuvers while avoiding another vehicle, pedestrian, or object while keeping the vehicle within its lane. Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5) will be available on more Toyota models as newer model years become available.

Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0)

Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) is a suite of advanced safety systems designed to help address three key areas of accident protection: Preventing or mitigating frontal collisions, keeping drivers within their lane, and enhancing road safety during nighttime driving. This system is found on a variety of compact, mid-size, and full size Toyota models that are from 2018 or newer. Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) builds on the previous Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) and Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) systems. Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) uses a camera, a millimeter-wave radar, and a grille mounted radar to monitor a vehicle’s projected path. Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) features like Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist, and Lane Tracing assist are commonly available.

Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P)

Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) was one of the first official Toyota Safety Sense™ systems for mid-size and large Toyota vehicles such as the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Sienna. This system uses a camera and a millimeter-wave radar at the front of the model to pick up other vehicles and smaller vehicles or objects on your daily commute. If the system detects a potential collision, it will alert the driver and offer assistance or take evasive action between 7 and 110 MPH. Pedestrian detection is another feature offered on Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P). Using the millimeter-wave radar, the system can detect pedestrians in your vehicle’s path and alert you to avoid an accident. Systems like Steering Assist and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) are also common on Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P).

Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C)

Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) debuted alongside Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) for compact Toyota vehicles such as the Toyota Corolla. This system uses a camera and laser radar at the front of the model to monitor vehicles on Lake Park roads. Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) is built to offer assistance or take evasive action when the vehicle is driving between 7 and 85 MPH. Features such as Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Vehicle Detection, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Automatic High Beams (AHB) are commonly found on Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C).

Toyota Safety Sense™ Features

The advanced features of Toyota Safety Sense™ are designed to keep you and your loved ones safe on the roadways from Palm Beach County to West Palm Beach. These safety features include:

  • The Automatic High Beams have a camera on your windshield that helps with nighttime driving – the camera detects headlights and taillights of other vehicles.
  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (also available with Bicyclist Detection) uses an integrated camera and radar system to reduce the likelihood of colliding with a vehicle or pedestrian on Palm Beach Gardens roads.
  • The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (also available with Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control) uses a radar located behind the Toyota badge and the camera on the windshield to adjust your speed and keep a good distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Lane Departure Alert (also available with Steering Assist and Road Edge Detection) helps you avoid the consequences of unintended lane departure by alerting you when it senses your vehicle veering toward the edge of your lane.
  • Lane Tracing Assist works with the Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and the lane markers. When enabled and using the lines on the roads, your vehicle will keep the preceding vehicle centered.
  • Road Sign Assist works with the forward-facing intelligent camera to detect speed limit, stop, do not enter, and yield signs on Palm Beach Gardens roads and then displays them on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
