If you’ve been searching for a midsize SUV that can satisfy the whole family, you’ve probably realized that both the 2019 Toyota Highlander and the 2019 Ford Explorer offer features and capabilities that many competitors can’t match. However, unless you’ve done your research, you may not realize what sets them apart! Before you make a decision, compare the performance and safety features of the 2019 Toyota Highlander vs. 2019 Ford Explorer.
Performance: Toyota Highlander vs. Ford Explorer
Almost no one chooses a new SUV without considering performance, and no matter what you’re looking for in your next midsize SUV, you’ll find that the Highlander simply brings more to the table.
- Every Highlander trim is available with a V6 engine that provides 295 hp, and it’s standard across the majority of the lineup. To enjoy more horsepower in the Ford Explorer, you’ll need to upgrade all the way to the high-end Sport or Platinum trims, which both cost close to $50,000.
- When equipped with a V6, the Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds. You can access these capacities in the baseline trim, but in order to tow a comparable load in the Explorer, you’ll have to upgrade to the Sport or the Platinum configuration.
- Comparing the Highlander V6 to the baseline Ford Explorer configuration, the Highlander fuel economy puts the Ford to shame. Drivers who choose Toyota will enjoy 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highways near Palm Beach Gardens. The Explorer only gets 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway.
- The 2019 Toyota Highlander is also available as a Hybrid, and this configuration is both more fuel efficient and more powerful than other models. The Ford Explorer is not currently available as a Hybrid.
Safety Features: Toyota or Ford?
Drivers trying to choose between the Highlander vs. Explorer can make their decision easier by considering the needs of their passengers. Comparing the Highlander V6 to the baseline Explorer configuration, only Toyota offers the following safety features, standard:
- Integrated turn signal mirrors
- Lane departure warning
- Lane keeping assist
- Pre-collision system with automatic emergency braking
Although some of these features can be found in the upgraded Explorer trims, others are completely unavailable! What’s more, upgraded Highlander models offer a Bird’s Eye View camera. No comparable feature is available in the Explorer.
