AWD, or “All-Wheel Drive”

AWD is a drivetrain configuration in which the torque from the engine is directed to the front and rear axles. There are different types of AWD systems available. For example, part-time AWD monitors road conditions and analyzes driving behavior to determine when the front axle requires torque. Other AWD systems, such as full-time AWD, direct torque to the front and rear axles continuously. Some of our most popular models, such as the Toyota Sequoia, come with AWD.

4WD, or “Four-Wheel Drive”

4WD is a more traditional 4×4 drivetrain. Although both AWD and 4WD vehicles send power to the front and rear axles, 4WD models can direct a specific amount of power to either the left or right wheels to optimize traction as needed. 4WD systems are best suited for off-roading vehicles and Toyota trucks

Is AWD Better than 4WD?

So, is AWD the same as 4WD? Or is one drivetrain clearly superior? The answer to that question depends on what your driving priorities and needs are. If you’re a suburban driver looking for extra traction during rainy weather or snowstorm conditions, an AWD vehicle would be the ideal choice. However, if you plan on doing a lot of off-road driving, a 4WD vehicle would be best.
